‘Near Salisbury? They are the big guns, and they were involved with the assumed Russian poisoning of Sergei and Yulia Skripal in March 2018. If they get involved, it will be very serious. Let’s hope that it doesn’t come to that. God, they run tests for viruses like Ebola, so fingers crossed we won’t need them.’

The cyber specialists, Georgie Maclean and Johnny White, from MI5 and the Met, respectively, were working well together. They had copied a backup of the dot-gov system and were tearing it apart line by line, and it would be only a matter of time before they uncovered the worm. They were running a program to compare the latest version on the server with an old archived file that was over three months old, and if the plan worked, it would highlight where in the file the change had been made. The search results wouldn’t be available instantly, because they would need to eliminate manually all updates loaded between when the archive was created and its current version. Hopefully, they would crack it within the next twenty-four hours.

That sounded like a promising result. But it would only allow them to delete the worm and wouldn’t help them find out who was involved in the first case besides Ronnie Merrick.

‘Maybe not,’ said Chalmers. His boss had said that a ‘leader’ would have been required. That was a small bit of computer code needed to load the worm, and if they had failed to delete it after the worm was loaded, it might tell them where the worm came from and maybe who had loaded it.

‘I can’t wait for the next twenty-four hours to pass,’ said Willis.

Chalmers told him the confinement period for an unknown virus could be anywhere between fourteen and forty-eight days, but if they identified it, it would be shorter because then they could test for its presence in the blood. He also warned Willis that Porton Down wanted the whole thing kept under wraps to avoid widespread panic. They would make a public announcement once they’d identified the cause.

‘I’ll look forward to your call tomorrow.’

Willis spent the next thirty minutes passing on Bill’s advice to everyone he knew who had investigated the incident on The Clipper.

‘That’s snookered any hope we had of carrying out any investigations,’ said Sophie. ‘It will be too dangerous until we can find out what the infection is.’

Willis called Jonathan and established contact with the members of the team who were doing the surveillance of the McLellan household, including the MI5 team, whose plan was to hack into the camera system in Kenny McLellan’s bedroom. The information came fast and furiously. From the MI5 team, he learned that Kenny had been aware The Clipper planned a trip out that night. They’d heard him speaking to Alec Devlin about the trip, but neither mentioned its reason or any details of its cargo. There was a call from a third party that they hadn’t identified, because it was from a second mobile that they were unaware existed.
